Carved Vessels

These forms are based on historical artwork that I have found interesting and beautiful.  The tripod legs are derived from Chinese ritual vessels and the carving has evolved from Greek volutes and granite carvings from Mesoamerica.  Each piece, while striving to be taken seriously, seems to have enough whimsy to make it animated, reminding me of children's fairy tales.  It is the strength of form and carving that most interest me.  I love carving so much that it is difficult for me to leave negative space.  The interconnected shapes and underlying textures activate the surfaces of these pieces and are in many ways how the history of long ago meets the present .
